The Growing Kids

Jacqueline is so big now. I know that's not what you want to hear! She can talk in complete sentances, ex: She asks herself or anyone around, "Where cat (or book or Eliza)?" then she answers, "Don't know!" One day, she couldn't find me, so she began wandering from room to room calling out, "Where go Mama?" She was quite distressed. She is also a master of disaster. Nothing is safe, she cuts a swath of chaos wherever she goes. Oh, Jacqueline has been by here, all of the books are on the floor. Or, she plucks little pieces off the roll of toilet paper and leaves the bathroom looking like a confetti bomb went off! And when I catch her in the act, she holds up a minuscule shred, offers it to me and smiles like she did me the biggest favor in the world!

She's also our newest escape artist. She has figured out how to open the front door. Here, she put on her hat and and was all ready to go, waiting at the elevator door. So we have to remember to dead bolt it whenever we are home. That worked for about 3 days and then today, she found an accomplice in Grant. We were getting ready for church and I thought I could hear Grant yelling out in the stairwell. So I had Eliza go check and sure enough, Grant was out there. Only Jackie had gotten a head start on him and she was up one floor at door #6. Our next solution is to lock the door with the key from the inside. And until Grant figures that out, we're safe for a while.

Now on to Grant. He finally likes haircuts. As you well know, he HATES getting his hair cut. So we'd usually wrap him up burrito style, Spencer holds him down and I buzz all the hair off as fast as I can. Those days are gone. (hopefully) We set up for a session and he actually wanted to put the cape on and get a hair cut like Daddy. He sat tall and it was successful. Isn't he so handsome?

Before

After

Mairyn is next in line for an update. She is loving school and is doing so well at reading. She had a bit of a rocky start, but I think that was due more to her personality conflicts with the teacher than anything. She now knows that we don't talk back to Mrs. McInroy or heave a great sigh and say, "I don't want to read. It's too hard!" She now reads some signs and packages aloud to us. She is discovering some of the world opening up to her by being literate. Mairyn is a little frustrated right now because she hasn't lost any teeth yet and she knows that Eliza lost her first one right when she began kindergarten. There is one that is minutely wiggly, so she's pinning some hope on that one coming out soon!

Ok, last but not least, Eliza. She is growing up way too fast for me. Every day I see little glimpses of an older girl peeking out a bit. She is more conscious of the state of her hair. She won't leave the house unless it has been brushed and she is experimenting with different "hairstyles". Last week she walks demurely into the kitchen with her back toward me, no matter what she did. She wanted me to notice the ponytail she had secured herself at the nape of her neck. She also pulls her own teeth. We were keeping an eye on a certain bicuspid and noticed that it was particularly wiggly. I went ahead brushing everyone else's teeth, then changing into p.j.s etc. About 5 minutes later, she comes running out of the bathroom, "Mommy! I pulled it out! I lost my 8th tooth!" She was very pleased with herself.

Spence is expanding his cooking repertoire to include cooking Ramen in a skillet. He could already cook it quite nicely in a pot, but he wanted to stretch his abilities and try the skillet. Fortunately it was a deep one and the ramen went on to become Friday lunch for the kids!

I am hanging in there, I am 10 weeks along and deep in the throes of "morning sickness". If there was ever a worse misnomer . . . . . I have discovered Dramamine helps with the vomiting, though. It's been failing me a bit the past couple days, so I am back to my old home remedies that kind of work; spearmint gum, a cocktail of vitamins and unisom, smelling lemons and lots of crackers. It really is quite miserable, but this will hopefully be waning by week 14. Anyway, that's an update of how the family is doing. And don't even ask for a picture of me. I don't do pictures, at least not now!!

Get over it!

Ok, that title is directed at me. I have to get over it!! What you ask? The roadblock in my mind that I have to include a picture every time I post. I could just write about what happened today! Point of all this, I need to post more often, no matter what! I read other blogs and they post every day. I get to one that hasn't posted that day, or for a couple days and I'm disappointed. Awww, nuts!! So, I'm going to try and apply that to me.

I am getting fed up with Egypt. I could also just be cranky because I'm nauseous and don't want to be bothered. Either way, it's Egypt's fault!! For example, I go to drop off Grant for pre-school there is no where to park. I also have little miss Cling-on, Jackie with me. So I'm looking for somewhere convenient. Oh wait, that word isn't in the Egyptian vocabulary. The roads have a car parked on each side with (usually) just enough room to squeeze one car through. Well, these are two way roads. So it's a matter of playing Tetris with our cars to get anywhere in Maadi. Long story short, I had to park around the corner, lugging Jackie and dragging Grant kicking and screaming to school. He has been really anti-school since the long vacation, so it's understandable.

I just want to be able to turn the kids out in a yard and let them run out their energy while I get something productive done at home. If they want to play outside, it's a whole production. Get shoes on, go potty, make sure we have water bottles (no drinkable water at the playground), enough wipes and a diaper, do you want to bring a ball?, etc. And then we pile into the elevator and get in the car to drive to Maadi House. And Maadi House is getting reeeaallly old. We don't have the option of CAC after school anymore. They are cracking down on something, I don't know what, but are enforcing the rule that no non-affiliate members (us) can come in the gates until after 5:30 p.m. And I'm not really a playground person. I think kids need to be left on their own to play and run and they'll come to me if they need something. I keep an eye on them on the playground, just from my comfortable seat in the shade. I'm not one of those parents that trails two steps behind their offspring, water bottle and diaper bag in hand, offering themselves to be walked all over if a whim needs fulfilling.

So, I guess that was my allotted rant for the week and I'll try to post something positive and picture-filled next time!!
