Sailing Through Life

On Saturday, the Relief Society ladies had a birthday bash on a felucca. It was the 167th celebration of the organization of said group. It was formed on March 17th, 1842 in Nauvoo, Illinois. Initially, the original intent was to assist & organize support, supplies & relief for the workers on the Nauvoo Temple. The Relief Society was officially formed soon after the implementation of these efforts. There were 18 women at it's inception and it has now grown into a worldwide organization of over 5.6 million women. I feel very blessed to belong to such an organization. Each baby I've had, there they are with a meal and a hug. It was the most unique celebration we've ever had. I'm sure our felucca captain was more than entertained by our singing and copious emotion sharing. He really enjoyed the sandwiches and strawberries we shared with him!

"a meal and a hug" ... I wasn't raised by huggers. I never understood how/why one should go up and hug someone you barely know. Then I had to go care for my father when he was struck with terminal cancer. This was in SC, and people there are real huggers... is it a Southern thing? I didn't go around with tissues and red eyes. I had my sweet, happy baby in arms and, well, Dad's passing was a process that lasted several months... I thought I looked and acted normal and in control. But I'd go to the bank, explain my needing to conduct Dad's business... and the teller would come around the counter and hug me! Pharmacists would react to Dad's prescriptions by coming out of their little booths to hug me. Doctors, neighbors, nurses... it was a mind-boggling, and very confusing (to me), hugfest of which I was always the surprised target... and I have to admit... it helped. (later, after I got over the shock of being hugged by total strangers).

Looks like a beautiful day out to celebrate a very good cause. :) Great photos of the felucca captain!
