We are wrapping up week 3 of the "Without an Elevator" saga. And it may be fixed today. We're getting positive reports from our trusty bowab, Mahmoud, that all is well, new motor is being installed and something about inshallah.
I know this word is just ingrained into the Arabic language, it's an expression. But seriously, when we're dealing with a metal box that hauls my children (precious cargo, IMHO) husband and myself up and down the height of six stories, I don't want to hear the arabic equivalent of "Yeah, hopefully" used in the same sentence as "Yes, the elevator is fixed."
I think I'm going to let Mahmoud and our landlord use it for a while, just to see how it goes. I'm not going to fall to my death 6 short weeks before I'm released from this place called Cairo.

I live in regular fear of our elevators. We have the original schindler prototypes in our building. These things are ancient! Let a few heavy people ride it first. Test it with boxes or suitcases. And then if you're really worried give the bowab 10LE to ride it for a day nonstop just to double check. LOL
BTW, do you know where your next posting is?
Elevators are such a basic need. I may be a wimp, but I've enough damage to have been handed medical disability by the military on my way out, so it isn't all my fault. Stairs are actually a danger for me as my knees just give out. I hate to have to rely on these old elevators (even the ones in our building, which are actually very good) but I don't have much choice... used to really hate it when the ones at work would go out. ow. Good luck with your building :p you're almost there!
Yeah, I'd play it safe too. And your children are definitely precious cargo so "Yeah, hopefully" definitely shouldn't cut it.
